Comparison As ...As Explanation

We can compare two things or actions which have the same quality with as adjective/adverb as.

As Adjective As 

We usually compare two things which have the same quality with as...as. Let's see the following examples.
  • My daughter is as beautiful as my wife.
  • My son is as fat as my wife.
  • My brother is not as tall as my father.

So Adjective As In Negative Sentences

We can replace as adjective as with so adjective as in negative sentences. Let's see the following examples.
  • My ex-girlfriend is not so beautiful as my wife.
  • My father  is not so fat as my mother.
  • My brother is not so tall as my father.

As Adjective As Preceded By Twice, Three Times

As adjective as can be preceded by twice, three times, four times, etc. Let's see the following examples.

  • Drinking water is twice as expensive as petrol these days.
  • Your house is three times as large as mine.

As Adverb As

We can compare two actions with as adverb as. Let's see the following examples.
  • The little boy can run as fast as me.
  • She went out of the door as quietly as she could.
  • He walked his 2 year old son as slowly as possible.
  • Call me as soon as possible!

The Same Noun As

Instead of as adjective/adjective as, we can use the same + noun + as to compare two things or actions. Let's see the following table.

as wide as
as long as
as old as
as expensive as
the same height as
the same height as
the same width as
the same length as
the same age as
the same price as

  • I am as tall as my wife.
  • I have the same height as my wife (does).
  • The snake is as long as the rope.
  • The snake has the same length as the rope (does).

Pronoun After As ... As

We use objective pronouns more often than subjective pronouns after as adjective/adverb as, but the subjective is more formal. Let's see the following table.

My wife is as tall as me.
She can speak English as well as me.
I'm not so talkative as her.
My wife is as tall as I am.
She can speak English as well as I can.
I'm not so talkative as she is.


Exercise

In this exercise you have to complete the sentences using as...as.
Example   : My sister is talkative and my mother is too.
You write : My sister is as talkative as my mother.

Too / Enough


Too and enough indicate degree. They are used with adjectives.

  • Too means more than what is needed.
  • Enough means sufficient.

Examples

He is too old to play football with the kids.
Dave is intelligent enough to do the write thing.
You're not working fast enough
I don't have enough time.
He has too many friends.
She has got too much patience

Use of too and enough

1.Enough precedes adjectives and adverbs:
He isn't old enough to watch this program.
We're not walking quickly enough.

2.Enough may also precede nouns:
We have enough money 
I have not got enough money to buy this computer.

3.Too comes before adjectives and adverbs:
It's too hot to wear that coat.
I was driving too fast.

4. Too may also come before nouns when it is used with the expressions too much and too many.
a. Too much is used before uncountable nouns.
There is too much salt in this food.
b. Too many is used before countable nouns
There are too many students in this classroom.
